One half to 2 miles is the norm but from mountaintop to valley (with some trees and hill in ways; not perfect line of sight) 6 miles has been achieved. Using for neighborhood watch/fire alert group. Have also programmed one for ham band and they sound great on a repeater. First radio my wife likes keeping in her purse (because of the slim light build.) Retevis has been great.
