I didn't think this balaclava would be windproof. It just looks like some fluff that the wind would cut through. However, I wore it in some below freezing weather with winds up to 30 miles per hour and it does great. The only cold area was around my eyes at the opening of the balaklava. The outer ring design doesn't really help with this as it should. Ideally one would pull the drawstring to reduce that open area, but that doesn't have the intended effect. The neck area of the hood is just not long enough. If you tighten the drawstring, that does narrow the area around your face, but in return it pulls the area around the chin up so your neck is exposed. I included a pair of pictures to show how the front neck area pulls up when you tighten the drawstring. Also, this isn't really a surprise because it's a problem with synthetic fabrics, but wow do you get a static shock when you pull it off your head in low humidity, which is likely in the environments in which you would need such a mask. This has been an absolute prize when it comes to the wet, bone-chilling cold we've suffered through recently. It is SO warm and comfortable, and with it being a bit loose around the head, though more fitted around the face, it insulates so much better than the tighter, more fitted around the head ones. Not only does it not give me a headache from being too tight, but I can wear my glasses or sunglasses with it and it doesn't press the arms into my head and make the spots behind my ears hurt. Being a bit looser, it also doesn't give me terrible 'hat hair' since it's not flattening my hair against my head as much. Being looser makes it insulate better, too, and keeps more of the warmth of my head in. Because it's fleece, it repels some water, so outside in the high humidity, misty cold still means my head is pretty dry. It also washes well, which means I can wear this and get it dirty and just throw it in the machine whereas my cashmere and wool hats have to be carefully hand washed so they don't get ruined. To be honest, it's not the most fashionable head warming piece of clothing I own but it is one of the most useful and functional. I do a lot of outdoor work and that work is often dirty and ruinous when it comes to clothes, so having something that's still cute but easy to care for is a big bonus for me. It's adjustable with drawstrings so it can be made a bit tighter on a particularly windy day but I find it functions well even just worn loosely as is. Easy to pull the face cover up and keep your nose and mouth warm without impeding your vision, it's just a great piece for daily use. Fairly midline in the pricing, though just knowing you're getting something that works, fits, and hasn't fallen apart is value in itself. Read more
