This is a fairly amazing knife set. The sharpness out of the box is beyond my expectations. The knives don't think about hesitating as they slice through the skin of a cherry tomato. Yes, the set was expensive. But I feel it is well worth the cost if you do much home cooking and food prep. I had some fair knives before, and I could sharpen them to a fairly keen edge, but it wouldn't last. These, after a month, seem just as sharp. Time will tell. I'm also not sure what it will be like to try to sharpen them when the time comes. The also look amazing. They fit perfectly with the light wood cabinets of our kitchen. This Shun Classic (Blonde) knife set is an exceptionally nice cutlery set of knives. I have the 4 blade and 1 honer set that comes with an angled wood block for stowing away your pieces. The blades come in a well guarded thin cardboard cover and wrapping tucked nicely in a narrow box, and well packaged in a larger box that contains the whole kit. I am more than impressed by the quality that Shun offers in this cutlery set. There is nothing that I can find that deviates from such high quality. These blades are very hard and with the Domascus steel type of blalde, you can see the layering that these blades have in the forging process. Being made in Japan, the quality really reflects such a well made product and the caliber of craftsmanship is far above par from any other knife I've ever used. I can't help think about these being like a true "Samurai sword" for chefs. The blades are a proprietary VG-Max toughness, and they hold their sharp edge very well. You can practically shave with these blades. That being said, you should take extra care when handling these, because they are ultra sharp. These are not the most affordable tools for the kitchen, but for anyone who is a devout culinary enthusiast, cook or chef, I feel the value and investment is very justifiable. The cuts are very clean and they do well on most anything I use them on, though I would strongly advise taking extra care with these and not cut bone, nor use them with forks, and do not thow them in the sink. They are hand wash recommended only, which might disuade some who do not want to take the extra step in hand washing and drying. If you take care of these they would seem to last you a decades and beyond. What I love about this company is that you can send them in and they will sharpen for you. Though you can use the honer to get a good restoration on the blade edge. Being a harder blade type, they are however prone to chipping the edge if you are not careful. I know there are more expensive sets out there on the market, but for what it's worth these are worth the extra cost. I am more than impressed. Read more
This is the most incredible knife set I have ever used. Sharp, sleek, and insanely well made. You can see the quality and craftmanship in every piece. These knives are handcrafted in Japan and look the part of being classic, modern, and top quality. These are best hand washed only, but they are simple to clean. Do not let that deter you from this over-the-top-set. I adore the blond wood handles, which match my cabinets. I've not experienced any fatigue from using these. Ergonomic feel and comfort cutting. I am unable to give this set the full start rating, because I am disappointed the knife block has more slots that the included set. While I understand this is so you could expand your set, it looks incomplete, especially if you were to give this set as a gift. Also, while these knives are easy to use and of incredible quality, I don't know of many home chefs or average families that cook that would need a set quite this grand. But they definitely make a statement and are the best knives you will ever use. Read more

This is a complete set, and every blade is very sharp. The wood block looks great and is very attractive. The knives are light and well-balanced, so they are comfortable to use for extended periods. I realize the may make this hard to pull the trigger for some, but I cannot stress enough how worth it these knives are. I've used Shun for years and the first one was a gift from my husband and was not thrilled at how much he paid. I ate my words because Shun is simply a pleasure. This set is no different from my other Shuns - exceptional. I know it may seem like oh, it's just a knife it can't be worth it but trust me they make knife work a pleasure. They are incredibly sharp and easy on the hands. If you've only used crappy knives, you will be thrilled with how Shun handles. They are beautiful too! I love the blond wood - it's very subtle and chic. I've sent my others off to get sharpened multiple times and it's hassle free and you get them back in no time.
