This is just the right size for sharpening knives. It is compact and can easily be stored in a kitchen drawer, but is large enough to easily control when using it. The section with the three slots to sharpen is in a lower section than where your is holding the sharpener in place, which allows use at a good speed without worrying about slipping out of the slot and cutting yourself. Also, each slot to sharpen dropped the blade down low enough to not easily come out. Between the different slots, the section was metal. This design with prevent me from cutting up plastic when I don't get it into the slot as I sharpen. For a small handheld sharpener, it was quick and easy to sharpen with. The first blade I used on this was 15 years old and my most heavily used blade. The first slot took out the very rough and uneven edges of the blade in less than a minute. After going through all three slots, the blade was significantly sharper. The design also allows left and right handed people to use the sharpener. Some sharpeners make it difficult to do left handed, but this one was great. The label for slot 1, 2, and 3 were just on the other side. The V angle in the slots also helped to keep the blade centered and sliding smoothly. Read more

We are living in a furnished rental, it came with knives that were all pretty dull. My husband's dad was a knife sharpener, so he has a special affinity for well sharpened knives. He was skeptical that a handheld tabletop sharpener would be able to get the job done. But he was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. It has three stages of sharpening: one to sharpen, one to hone, and one to polish. It only took about 10 - 15 passes of the blade through each of the steps and then the knife was sharp enough to cut paper. It did a great job, far surpassing his expectations. It's also very easy to use. You need no sharpening experience to use this effectively. The sharpener itself is well made and sturdy. for the price ($22) it's a great sharpener and I expect it to last a long time. It has a rubber bottom, so when you place it down, it's not going to crack, or slide around on the counter. Read more

Zyliss Knife Sharpener - Handheld Tool with Slots for Scissors, Serrated Knives & Straight Blades - Sharpen, Hone & Polish Dull Blades – Easy-to-Use Countertop Knife Sharpener. This handheld knife sharpener is good for quick and basic kitchen upkeep, and it works well for everyday sharpening needs. The size is compact and easy to hold on the counter, but that also means it’s not designed for heavy duty sharpening. The sharpening pads are fairly small, so you do need to hold the knife steady and use a controlled motion, especially with larger or thicker blades. Functionality is simple and straightforward. The clearly marked slots for straight blades, serrated knives, and scissors make it easy to use without guessing. A few passes noticeably improve dull knives, and it’s good for quick touch-ups rather than restoring badly damaged edges. Build quality feels durable for regular home use, with no looseness or wear after multiple sessions. The black and silver design is clean and practical, and it doesn’t take up much space in a drawer. For the price, it offers good value. Read more

This sharpener has a really nice build quality, and the larger size feels much safer and more secure in my hand compared to other styles I’ve used in the past. It feels sturdy during use, which is a big plus for safety. However, I found that it is definitely more suited for thin-bladed kitchen knives rather than thicker steel pocket or recreational knives. In my opinion, the pitch of the sharpeners is designed for a finer edge than what you’d typically want on a folding knife. Another drawback is that the contact points are recessed about 5/8” into the frame; because of this, the knife handle hits the edge of the sharpener, leaving about 5/8” of the blade near the handle unsharpened. It’s a well-made tool, but it works best if you’re strictly sticking to standard kitchen cutlery. Read more
Mr Aloha Friday—December 26, 2025
Mrs Aloha Friday has purchased several kitchenware pieces from the Zyliss brand over the year, from a garlic press to a cheese grater, and has never been disappointed. She was excited to try this sharpener because she has a similar style by a cheaper, unknown brand, and thought this might excel where that one is just okay. She was right! She never heard the sounds coming from the knife as she dragged it across the sharpening slots. It WORKS SO WELL. She used all 3 slots as it had been a while since she sharpened her favorite 26 year old Henkels. (It was a wedding gift.) You want to feel the knife really be gripped in the slots when you first start out. If the knife is dull it will be noisier and you'll want to make extra passes. Just rest the knife and slide it along. Be gentle but firm. She also sharpened a pair of scissors in the large slot and it was excellent. The tomatoes are the finished product. She also sliced through that super heavy cardboard box in the video. It worked very well, despite her cutting it at a weird angle. Solid gold 5 stars all around. Read more
